August 7, 1997... a day that Garth made history in New York's
Central Park. The day was hot, and people had been staked out
in the park since the early morning hours. The numbers vary
from 250,000 to 1.1 million people being there. Garth's people
seemed to think the number was closer to 750,000 people.
"Hello New York," Garth screamed after his first
song, "Rodeo" was finished. The crowd screamed in
greeting back, people held up huge banners proclaiming their
love for Garth. And Garth just beamed, as if unable to believe
this many people were here to see him.
I myself only was able to watch the event at home on HBO, but
it was still incredible, the outpouring of love from the fans
that attended to Garth. I'm sure I saw everything much more
clearly than someone that was at the concert, halfway back.
It was an excellent job of camerawork. I think HBO got just
enough crowd reaction at just the right times. They never
stayed on the crowd, nor only on Garth or the band, yet they
didn't jump back and forth. Everything was lighted well, and
the effects were fantastic.
A wonderful time was had by those there in New York, as well
as those of us watching at home.
Garth, you done yourself proud.
