"Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming
bright.
From afar drawing nigh -- Falls the night.
"Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky.
All is well, safely
rest, God is nigh.
"Then good night, peaceful night,
Till the light
of the dawn shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear -- Friend, good night."
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall was conceived by Jan Scruggs,
who
served in Vietnam (1969-1970) as an infantry corporal with the
199th Light Infantry
Brigade. It contains 58,000+ names of servicemen and
women who gave their lives
in Vietnam. Designer of the wall was Ohioan
Maya Ying Lin, a Yale University
student at the time. Dedicated on
Memorial Day in 1982, The Wall serves as a
memorial to those who
sacrificed their lives and also for those who, thankfully,
came home.
