Outfielder Hack Wilson: "If you drink whiskey, you'll never get worms."
(Boston, March 17, 1999) Hack was a beer barrel of a man. Five-foot six, 190, broad shoulders, an 18 inch neck, and size 6 shoes... His records stood the test of time. His RBI record still stands... 191 RBI!!! (It stood as 190 for years, but a recent recount revealed a reclusive ribbie on the back end of a doubleheader.) A fireplug, a boozer, gambler, and a brawler... and, ultimately, a baseball legend...
In 1929 he established himself as a powerhouse. Batted .345 with 39 homers and a league-leading 159 RBI. Brought the Cubs to their first pennant since 1918. And in 1930 he blasted the vault, hitting .356 and establishing a National League record 56 homeruns (which held for 68 years, until Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa in 1998) and a mind-numbing 191 RBI. A record that stands today.
