Johnny's 1997 Roundup

(Boston, March 1998) An interesting season, to say the least. The Mighty Atlanta Braves are turned back once again, this time by Jim Leyland's pre-fab juggernaut, the Florida Marlins, who battle the Indians and go on to take the whole thing. Let the Garage Sale begin! Good Fish Cheap! Well, the last couple of games of the World Series were good ones...

Interleague play... I was skeptical at first, but it was exciting. NL kicked ass. Big surprise. Season's too long with the extra round of playoffs. As commissioner I will bring back the 154 game season.

Some monster offensive seasons, McGwire, Piazza, Thomas, & Gwynn. And I don't see this changing with two new expansion teams... look for HR leaders to get in the 50s on a regular basis, and watch Maris' record fall hard!

And there are still a handful of classic pitchers in the game. Start with Greg Maddux (2.20/19-4) John Smoltz, and Tom Glavine (2.96) of the Braves, Johnson, Clemens, Mussina, Martinez... amazing that they change uniforms so quickly.

World Champions: Florida Marlins (NL, disbanded team 5 minutes later)
AL Champs: Cleveland Indians (establishing a good winning tradition in a nice ballpark)

NL BATTING: Tony Gwynn (.372)
AL BATTING: Frank Thomas (.347) The Big Hurt, The Man.

LEADER: Mark McGwire (58/123/.274 are his totals, traded from the A's to the Cards in August, I think.)

NL HR: Larry Walker (49)
AL HR: Junior Griffey (56)

NL MVP: Larry Walker (49/130/.366/33 stolen bases/409 total bases/Gold Glove)
AL MVP: Junior Griffey (56/147... what can you say? Nice year, Junior.)

NL CY YOUNG: Pedro Martinez (305k/1.90, traded to Boston shortly after being named)
AL CY YOUNG: Roger Clemens (Cy #4 and pitching's triple crown for the Rocket)

NL ROOKIE: Scott Rolen (.283/21/92)
AL ROOKIE: Nomar Garciaparra (.306/30/98/209 hits) The Natural.
