THE BALLAD OF JOSH CARLISLE

March came in like a polar bear the wind chilled to the bone
A little boy named Josh had wandered off somewhere alone
While the Barry County Sheriff led the party on the search
Josh's family was preparing for the worst

The temperature was minus two the first night he was gone
Josh's mama prayed to God Lord send your angels keep him warm
The only hope we have is for a miracle from you
I know in Jesus' name there's nothing you can't do

Chorus:

Sometimes we fight against all odds our hope seems all in vain
But there's a higher power you can call him by his name
You don't just believe in God remember God believes in you
In Jesus' name there's nothing God can't do

No one had heard a word two nights went by with record lows
Oscar Nell was riding his horse Toot-Toot down the road
She heard some dogs a barking and he saw two skinny strays
They followed to a dry creek bed and there Josh Carlisle lay

Seems a heeler and a dachsund found the boy and kept him warm
Through seventy long hours they'd protected him from harm
For a while the two dogs kept the rescuers at bay
Till Dana from the canine corps convinced them it's ok

That dachsund chased the ambulance
fast as her short legs could run
But the heeler didn't follow 'cause she knew their job was done
They just disappeared into the woods
went back to who knows where
Sometimes I wonder were they really there

(Spoken)

Now here's what really happened to the two dogs in the song
Josh's family adopted them and now they've got a home
Josh named the dachsund Baby and the heeler he calls Angel
Angel? I think I know why

Repeat Chorus
