About the Lake Shore Squares
The Lake Shore Squares dance every first and third Saturday nights at the YMCA Building in Gainesville, Ga. It is located next to the Holiday Inn at Jesse Jewel Blvd.
The Lake Shore Squares are a member of the North East Georgia Federation. Our Federation consist of 13 other clubs in the N.E. Georgia area.
One of the main charities the Federation raises money for is the Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital. Over the course of the last several years the Federation has raised over $300,000 for Scottish Rite, a fact we are all VERY proud of.
Our dances often have a Theme to add to the fun. (See our 1998 Schedule at the page bottom for remaining dances and themes.) Beside the themes listed on the schedule, we have also have had... Luau Dance, Sweetheart Dance, St. Paddy's Dance, Costume Dance, Suprise Wedding Shower, and the club co-hosted a Square Dance Wedding. My wife and I were married at Midnight on New Years Eve 1996. We square danced from 9 to 11:30 pm. Then we had the wedding. A very large crowd was on hand, and everyone had a GREAT time. Pictures will be added of the event. The club also had a benefit dance for one of our members who lost her home in the tornado's in North Georgia in March. We were able to raise over $1,800 for her. That's what square dancing is all about. Fun and fellowship. Pictures will be added soon. Come back and see us again soon.

Square Dancing in general
Square dancing is a fun, activity, that includes people of all ages. All the dance clubs operate on a christian background. All dances begin with a prayer and there is never any drinking, smoking or vulgar language at the dances. It is very family oriented. We invite kids of all ages to attend the dances. Square dancing is NOT a couples activity. Yes, we do dance as couples, but many people attend the dance as singles. There are always many single men and ladies in attendance at the dances. So don't get the ideal you can't learn to dance because you don't have a partner...!! EVERYONE is welcome to attend classes and the dances. My wife and I generally dance the first and last dance with each other, but make a point to dance the other dance tips with other people. It's really fun to get to dance with and meet other people. We have meet people from all over the country, and have friends in a lot of different cities. Square dancing is only called in ENGLISH. No matter where you go in the world you can square dance. There is an annual State Convention in each state, and also a National Convention. ( At last years State Convention my wife and I danced to over 50 different callers and to over 100 songs.) There are also square dance cruises, dance fund raiser, etc. You get the idea... almost anything you do, you can do square dancing. Square dancing is not necessarily a Country Music activity. We have danced to country, gospel and even rock. Last year we danced to the Pointer Sisters "Neutron Dance".
The clubs all have "Theme" dances, and fun dances. At the theme dances you are encouraged to wear attire representing the theme. (Our next dance is a Football dance.)
At the fun dances, you can earn dangles to add to your name badges. Some examples are:
Purple Heart : dance with 3 callers in your square
Angel: help teach square dance class
Church Mouse: dance in a church
Maple Leaf: must dance in Canada
Feet: square dance bare footed
My wife and I had special dangles made to give to all the dancers that attended our Wedding Dance. They were Wedding Bells with the date on them.
Put away all your preconceived notions about square dancing and come out and give it a try. You will be suprised how easy and fun it is. That's what square dancing is all about. Fun and fellowship... set to music. |
