I used to fall asleep every Saturday night listening to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys: Luke Wills, Tommy Duncan, and of course "Pick it pretty, Leon" McAuliffe. My Uncle Bill Summons owned "The Barn", a dence hall in Bakersfield, Calif. He booked the b nds and sold beer with his brother, Ralph. My Aunt Willie sold tickets, My Dad was the bouncer, my Mom made burgers and hot dogs, and my Cousin Ken and I cleaned up the parking lot on Sunday mornings for $1 apiece. Bob and Luke had it going on (Luke was the sober one); when they had a gig somewhere else, there would be another band; like as not it would be Count (Bill) Basie, who liked playing there because he got no attitude nor hassles. Bill and Ralph had another ance hall on the North side of town called "Beardsley Ballroom"; there I got to hear and meet Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, and more. Benny Goodman was impressive; he had a guy following him around carrying his reeds... under his arm! It was supposed to keep them at the right temperature and humidity for instant playability. I hope we have some Scots ancestors besides the reprehensible Balliols. I'll retire in Scotland (Dumfries... Baillie/Bailey/Balliol country) if the money allows. Wish I could hear your show. I'll be back to stay updated. That "half a pint" tune was little guitar thing a fellow by the name of Lawless used to play. I never heard any words for it but it was a nice catchy little thing. I always figgered it was just something he did but then it might be a legitimate song fro an earlier time than mine. Mister ( or Col.) Lawless was a squadron mate of my father. Dad decided at the ripe old age of 43 to learn to play the fiddle. As a result of this we used to have several guys and their wives over to play music and Mr. Lawless was one of the guitar pick rs. We all had a good time and i usually got to run the tape recorder. Anyway, there is a soft spot in my heart for the old country stuff and i am really glad to have come across your radio show and this dandy web site. More power to ya. Marcus Hill |
