The example in the left hand corner is showing E,A,D,G,B,E. The E beside of the A would be the top of the guitar, the largest string, the A is the second largest string.  When you strike these strings open without putting your fingers on them they will make the E,A,D,G,B,E. When you look at the cords I have drawn for you, you will notice the open circles. This means the string is struck open with no fingers pressed on them. The black dot is where you put your fingers. The x means you do not strike that string when playing.
Notice on your guitar the little silver bars that are on the neck. These are called frets. You place your fingers between the frets and not on them to get a good sound. You must press firmly on the string when playing the cord.
Notice the C cord.

The pointer finger is place on the first fret 2nd string, the middle finger is placed on the second fret 4th string, the ring finger is placed on the third fret 5th.
