The International Union, UAW, with 780,000 active and 500,000 retired members is one of the largest labor unions in the United States. The UAW has approximately 1,130 local unions and negotiates 2,100 contracts with about 1,500 employers in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. The UAW represents workers in a variety of industries and occupations, including more than 500,000 members in the U.S. auto industry. Working together as a united organization, auto workers have achieved a meaningful voice to address workplace issues and concerns. Union members have used that voice to develop partnerships with DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, and many other companies. As a result, U.S. autoworkers build great products for healthy companies, while enjoying job stability, fair pay, superior health benefits and genuine retirement security. The International Union works closely with local unions to train members, to help negotiate the best possible contracts, to represent workers on political and legislative issues, and to advance the overall social, economic, and political interests of working families. Resources available from the International Union include experienced labor attorneys, research analysts and economists, actuaries and social security experts; health and safety specialists, and others who assist in negotiating contracts. The International Union also helps local unions to enforce labor agreements on a day-to-day basis in the workplace. UAW-negotiated contracts are widely viewed as among the best available anywhere in American industry. But our union is about much more than contracts and negotiaions. We are a social organization, a meeting place, and a common cause which unites more than a million families from diverse backgrounds from all over the United States. Union members celebrate together when times are good, and stand together when times are tough. Whether contributing to the United Way or a local charity, organizing a Red Cross blood bank, or sponsoring a softball team, the UAW can be found wherever Americans come together to stand up for their families, improve their lives and better their communities. |
