Surjit Bindrakhiya
We regret to inform you the Internationally renowned Punjabi Folk Singer Surjit Bindrakhiya's
sudden demise. He died in his sleep at his residence in Mohali on November 17th 2003. Surjit Bindrakhiya
was suffering from the health problem for over a year and is declared to have died of a major
heart attack. The high-pitched melodious voice of Punjab fell silent forever.
Surjit Bindrakhiya was born at village Bindrakh in Distt. Ropar, Punjab on April 15, 1962.
Surjit was a folk singer with a strong personality and mesmerising voice. His songs on one
hand had a touch of folk music and on the other hand he gave a new definition to punjabi music
in his songs. He emerged as the one of the few top performers in the punjabi music industry.
He was a trained wrestler following the footsteps of his father Sucha Singh. He also won
intercollege bouts at the university level. But the fate had decided something else for him.
He started singing with his Bhangra Troupe. It was after that the big stage was all set for him.
His first album 'Munda Kee Mangda' released in 1991-92 was a great success.

Admitted to Silver Oaks Hospital three weeks ago, he was discharged after 10 days, he had a
massive heart attack and died in sleep on Monday. He was cremated at his native village, Bindrakh.
Eminent Singers and artists including Gurdas Mann, Shamsher Sandhu, Babbu Mann, Jasbir Jassi,
Sardool Sikander, Gurpreet Ghuggi and many more were among those who joined Bindrakhia’s last
rites in Surjit's native village 'Bindrakh'.
Surjit Bindrakhiya is survived by Mrs Gurbachan Kaur (mother), Preet Bains (widow), Gitaj (son)
and Minaj (daughter).
