Joe Pernice was the songwriting pivot of Massachusetts' Scud Mountain Boys, a band who, over the course of three lovely and largely unnoticed albums, found a melancholy and understated way of playing country rock. The debut album from the Pernice Brothers finds a, well, melancholy and understated way of playing pop music. And it's tremendous. "Overcome By Happiness' (title a tad ironic, naturally) is the product of Pernice's ambition "to make a pretty and mellow pop record". Pretty in the warm and woody chugging style of Teenage Fanclub, perhaps, pretty like Burt Bacharach's bluer moods, or the string-laden chamber pop of Pernice's old Sub Pop labelmate Eric Matthews.
