Growing up William was a mischievous little boy. He always played practical jokes on

dropped out of school for a while, and when they moved to Kansas he learned to shoot bow
and arrows from the Indian boys. He also learned to talk their language, Kickapoo.
Throughout his childhood, he gained employment from Mr. William Russell. Working for him
gave him great knowledge about handling cattle and mules. His last job with Russell,
Majors & Waddell was assistant wagon master. Then he became a trapper for a little
while, and then he went on to try his hand prospecting, but he was a poor miner. He met up
with Mr. George Chrisman, leading wagon master for Russell, Majors & Waddell. Mr.
Chrisman hired him as a Pony Express Rider and sent him to Three Crossings, Wyoming to
work for a man by the name of Teaspoon Hunter. Love
