Summary: Growing up William was a mischievous little boy. He always played practical jokes on people like hiding the other children's clothes while they were swimming in the lake. He dropped out of school for a while, and when they moved to Kansas he learned to shoot bow and arrows from the Indian boys. He also learned to talk their language, Kickapoo. Throughout his childhood, he gained employment from Mr. William Russell. Working for him gave him great knowledge about handling cattle and mules. His last job with Russell, Majors & Waddell was assistant wagon master. Then he became a trapper for a little while, and then he went on to try his hand prospecting, but he was a poor miner. He met up with Mr. George Chrisman, leading wagon master for Russell, Majors & Waddell. Mr. Chrisman hired him as a Pony Express Rider and sent him to Three Crossings, Wyoming to work for a man by the name of Teaspoon Hunter.
