Summary: She was raised by her aunt and uncle in Kansas City, Missouri because her parents were killed when she was only 4 years old. In the last few years the skirmishes between the pro and anti-slavery forces were esculating. Her uncle found himself in the middle of such a skirmish one day, and though he stood up for what he believed in, he was murdered that day from his opposition. The man was tried and hung, but that didn't bring her uncle back. There wasn't much work where she lived, and besides she was tired of the town, so she decided to set out to find a profitable job, so that she could send money back to her aunt. Her aunt had supported her while she was growing up, the least she could do was pay her back for her generosity over the years.
