SHOWDOWN

(G. Kuchenmeister)

© 1999 Jerry K, BMI

I stood there on the corner in front of Woolworth's five and dime
Face to face with my reflection in the New York autumn time
I traced every line my face acquired through the years
That man must have the answers cause his face is showing wear

I walked a little further up that cold dark city street
And was accosted by a stranger with no shoes on his feet
We exchanged some words and gratitudes we seemed so much the same
His face looked so familiar but I couldn't place the name

CHORUS
There's a showdown between the past and where I'll be
What I'm not sure of is which one of them is me
There's a showdown between my heart and what I see

As he spoke I could hear a hint of wisdom in his voice
He looked at me knowingly and said careful with each choice
Cause the road is long with many forks at each you must decide
Which is right and which is wrong and which way you will ride

He shared his treasured bottle the gesture humbled me to tears
He reminded me our paths had crossed a few times through the years
I tried to recollect the times and took a sip of wine
We stood exchanging stories neath a broken neon sign

REPEAT CHORUS

We passed a mirrored window where the image seemed to change
Suddenly we were boys again our places re-arranged
I guess I didn't have the answers I should have noticed that before
This homeless humble wanderer had taught me there is more

We walked and talked awhile then we went our separate ways
Just like we had done sometime on some far and distant day
He said years ago you chose that road as I have picked my own
I am the man you might have been had fate not come along

REPEAT CHORUS
