This page is dedicated to the music of my teenage
years in Memphis, TN, home of Elvis, Sun Recording
Studio, Graceland and more.

VISIT THE SITE OF THE LATE DEWEY PHILLIPS-
FIRST D.J. TO EVER PLAY
ELVIS.
-
DEWEY PLAYED ARTISTS THAT NO ONE ELSE
DARED TO PLAY - - NO RADIO STATION
AT THAT TIME WOULD PLAY THE BLACK R & B
ARTIST OR ANYTHING NEW AND DIFFERENT - BUT,
DEWEY- (WITH THE HELP OF SAM PHILLIPS - NO
RELATION
- OF SUN RECORDING STUDIO) DID
WHAT NO ONE ELSE WOULD DO.
IF HE HAD NOT, I'M NOT SURE ANYBODY WOULD
HAVE EVER HEARD ELVIS (OR ANY OF THE OTHER
ORIGINAL SUN AND STAX RECORDING ARTIST).

Check out the SITE

Dewey Philips

Dewey's bio at this site states that 80%
of the Memphis residents tuned in to his
radio show
"RED, and BLUE"
every night.
I don't know about the 80%, but I do know that
my sister and I would listen to him every night after
"lights out". We had to turn the radio down really low
so my dad couldn't hear it - sometimes having to put it
under the pillows when he was having a sleepless night.
Somehow we always managed to hear most of the show.
This was where we first heard Elvis. We had been listening to the R & B singers on his show for a long time.

If ANY Disk Jockey deserves to be in the
ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME
DEWEY PHILLIPS
does!!!!

.

We attended M E S S I C K HIGH SCHOOL in Memphis.
Some of the students that attended there that became
well-known in the music business were:

Ed Bruce (country singer/songwriter)

B.B. Cunningham (musician/record producer)

Don Nix
Donald "Duck" Dunn
Steve Cropper
Charles (Packy) Axton

WHO'S......WHO???

Steve Cropper (see photo below)

(co-writer of "Dock of the Bay",
"Soul Man", "In the Midnight Hour",
"Knock on Wood" and "Hey Bartender")

Listen to a sample from the Rock Hall of Fame-
On this page you can hear Wilson Pickett's
"IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR"
with Steve, Duck
and other members of Booker T. and The MG's
(By the way, did you know that "MG"
stands for "Memphis Group"??)
SAMPLE

Don, Charlie, Duck and Steve were original members
of the STAX RECORD COMPANY
house band and formed a group called theMar-Keys.
Steve and Duck were musicians and key features
in the movie "BLUES BROTHERS".
(Look for Duck and Steve featured at the end)
***and***
They were even more prominent in
"BLUES BROTHERS 2000"
Remember the two Disk Jockey's at the beginning of the movie that quit to travel with the Brothers??
They sure have changed since the Messick days!!!
(But, hey, haven't we ALL??)
