The discovery among documents of the St. Petersburg Lutheran Church, near Scranton, PA of the a record stating that George Wehrung was born in 1815 in "Ziewiller" led to the informatioyn below, supplied by Paul Wehrung of Owego, NY. Proof that George of Pennsylvania and Georg of Siewiller are the same has yet to be established, and is currently under investigation. A family story holds that he came to the United States alone, intending to send for his family, and then remarried. 2m Catherine Meier b 8 July 1827 (Maffingen, GER) d 6 Nov 1896 (Scranton, PA) C) HANS PHILIPP WEHRUNG b c21 Jan 1684 d 26 Nov 1768 (Drulingen, Alsace, FRA) m DORTHEA SCHNEIDER, 21 Jan 1712 b c1690 d 21 June 1753 (Drulingen, Alsace, FRA) issue: A] JOHANN PETER WEHRUNG b 2 Dec 1715 (Drulingen, Alsace) d 1 Jan 1775 (Ottwiller, Alsace) m SUSANNA MARGARETHA STROH, 28 June 1746 b c1 Feb 1728 (Veckerswiller, Moselle, FRA) d 3 Thermidor VI (21 July 1798) (Ottwiller) issue: c) (Johann) Theobold Wehrung b 17 May 1752 (Ottwiller, Alsace) d 1 Sept 1841 (Ottwiller, Bas-Rhin, FRA) m (Anna) Christina Schneider, 8 Apr 1777 b 23 Oct 1759 (Ottwiller, Bas-Rhin, FRA) d 23 Pluviose V (11 Feb 1797) (Ottwiller) 2m Margaretha [Marguerite] Hoffmann b c1771 (Petersbach, Alsace) d 3 Jan 1857 (Ottwiller, Bas-Rhin, FRA) I did not find a record of this marriage, but it is confirmed by Thibolt's death record. It began in 1785 when she brought her illegitimate son to the church for baptism. The putative father was one Johann Nickel Marzloff--but he denied this claim under pain of "Purgatory". Some time after she left Drulingen for Berg, where her cousin Peter Wehrung, originally of Siewiller, had settled some years before. There she married, and took in her aged father after the death of her mother. issue: x] Johann Adam Wehrung (illegitimate) b 25 July 1785 (Drulingen, Alsace) d m (Wilhemina) Sophie Eulert, 22 Nov 1809 b Berg, Alsace d 5 Oct 1813 (Berg, Bas-Rhin, FRA) 2m Margaretha Christina Bieber, 25 May 1814 b 30 Nov 1788 (Hambach, Alsace) d issue: WEHRUNG OF C} Jacob [Jacques] Wehrung CINCINNATI, OH b 16 Mar 1816 (Berg, FRA) d 25 Feb 1876 (Hamilton Co., OH) m Margaretha Schmitt. 12 Feb 1844 b 9 June 1818 (Wolfskirchen, FRA) d 8 Sept 1890 (Hamilton Co., OH) E} Johann Adam Wehrung b 6 Mar 1821 (Berg, Bas-Rhin, FRA) d 29 Mar 1891 (Cincinnati, OH) m Katharina Klein b 1826 d 10 June 1902 D] Johann Theobold Wehrung b 14 Sept 1724 (Drulingen, Alsace) d 17 Oct 1789 (Drulingen, Alsace) m Maria Margaretha Marlang b cFeb 1732 d 30 Jan 1794, (Drulingen, Bas-Rhin, FRA) issue: c) Johann Adam Wehrung b 22 Mar 1769 (Drulingen, Alsace) d Russia? m Maria Catharina Rausch, 14 Aug 1793 b Ratzwiller, Bas-Rhin, FRA d Russia According information supplied by genealogist Doris Wesner, both parents emigrated to Russia in 1803. Why their last son should have remained behind is a question that can no longer be answered, but he would make a farther journey-- across the sea to America--just as he was starting his family. Their story is found as part of An Ensminger Family from Alsace: The Descendants of Conrad Ensminger and Carolina Gaupp from Diemeringen Alsace by Robert D. The origins of Nicolaus Wehrung are unknown at present. The U.S. census provides an aproximate year of birth, amd it is interesting to note that his wife's surname, Bach, was also known in the area north of Drulingen, suggesting that they married before emigrating.
NICOLAUS WEHRUNG b c1813 (Bas-Rhin, France) d by 1870? m ELISABETHA BACH b c1819 (Bas-Rhin?, France) The 1850 Philadelphia federal census (8th [Kensington] Ward) recorded Nicolaus Wehrung as being a cabinetmaker, while in the 1860 census (23rd Ward) he was simply referred to as a carpenter. The fates of only three of his children are known; none but his third son (and new family) appear in the 1870 Philadelphia census; they shortly left for Texas. Nicolaus was probably dead by then, since neither he nor his wife are listed in 1870. issue: A) Jacob Wehrung b c1840 (Philadelphia, PA) d 20 July 1862 (Manassas, VA) Jacob Wehrung was an early victim of the Civil War. He enlisted at Philadelphia as a Private in Company C if tge 6th Regiment if Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on September 10, 1861. He is reported as having died on July 20, 1852 at Bull Run. If the date is correct, he would have been killed in a skirmish before the actual battle itself, which did not take place until the following day. His grave is found in the Hampton National Cemetery, VA, Row 8, Section 7, Grave E. B) John Wehrung b c1843 C) Theodore Wehrung b 8 Mar 1846 (Philadelphia, PA) d 27 Feb 1924 (Austin, TX) m Catharina Elisabetha Siemon, 2 Aug 1866 (Philadelphia) b 9 May 1848 (Philadelphia, PA) d 20 May 1932 (Burnet, TX) Names and dates pertaining to Theodore's children were found in a family bible record supplied by the Mormons, in the possession of Mrs. Eva E. (Raven) Goss in 1959. The 1870 census reveals that Theodore was a house carpenter, a trade he would have pursued when he took his family to Texas some time between 1871 and 1875. The 1870 census also records Amelia Siemon (age 55, born in Hesse, GER), and Adam Siemon (age 13) residing in the Wehrung household. This may have been Catherina Elisabetha's mother. issue: A] Amilie E.
