Pat Martino play this phrase in the famous
Wayne Shorter's minor blues "Footprints". To read easier the signature in the
transcription is 3/4 but the original was 6/8. The phrasing start at the beginning of the
second chorus of the solo at 1:44, track 4 of the CD. The ascending segment is not played
in a particular scale, but it as a symmetrical meaning. The group of three beginning notes
E, F, G is repeated and transposed a fourth up (A, Bb, C - D, Eb, F - G, Ab, Bb). From
this point the phrase is out of the tonality. In fact the chord is Dm7, Pat builds his
line thinking the chord and half tone up and so as Ebm7 (Eb dorian). This tension remind
us the way of modal playing on the static harmony che ricrea il rapporto armonico
tensione-risoluzione della musica tonale a livello melodico.
