The Boudoir

The room is small but cozy. A large window frames the far wall, open to the sounds and scents of the shops and cafés below. Tiny flames floating above their candlefuel cast faint shadows around the room, slowly waving adieu to the day. As you wander over to the armoire tucked in the corner, your eyes rise to the top.

On the highest shelf, a collection of CDs stand next to a handsome stereo. Tiny red and green lights dance across its face. One case is open...exotic rhythms are pulsing from speakers hidden in the dark corners.

On the shelf below, a few videotapes line across the front. Their charming, sexy titles catch your eye, but you imagine you will discover a few blue movies in the shadows behind them. Your curiosity peaked, you reach in to find nothing but some candles. It seems these films are sensuous enough for the occupant of this room.

On the desk lay notes and books with scarlet and teal hardcovers. The classics, the romantics and erotic prose. With the sound of horses hooves restless on the cobblestone outside, you settle in to a deep chair. On the walls around you, voluptuous women lay in repose, their painted eyes following yours as you lean into the soft arm of your seat. Your eyes feel heavy under their penetrating gaze. Slowly, almost against your will, a slumber reels you in. When you wake, you can look forward to exploring the rest of the boudoir.

Pablo Neruda

"I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair.
Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets.
Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me,
all day I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps."

From "Love Sonnet #11" ©Pablo Neruda

This talented writer from Chile, may his soul rest in peace, was known among the literate community as a sensual love poet. His life inspired a character who acted as mentor and matchmaker to a young, lovesick poet in a movie called Il Postino-The Postman. Many of his works were translated, and have become well-known around the world.

Kenneth Rexroth

"Tired of motion, of the rhythms of motion,
Tired of the sweet play of our interwoven strength,
We lie in each other's arms and let the palps
Of waterlily leaf and petal hold back
All motion in the heat thickened, drowsing air..."

From "Floating"©Kenneth Rexroth

Rexroth, an American poet well-known during the Beat era, enjoyed envisioning the conjugation of lovers within the majesty of nature. His characters would connect on a placid lake at sunset, or in the meadows of sun at high noon. He excelled at establishing an erotic, natural mood.

Irving Layton

"And full of grace. Such lightness
Is in your step, instruments
I keep for the beholder
To prove you walk, not dance."

From "Divinity" ©Irving Layton
