Second-Hand Blessing

Inside a box of rags and ends

send from somewhere

far away

By angels who had heard how hard

my daddy worked

and mama prayed

I found a tiny Bible tucked away

blue covers and red letters

to share what Jesus

had to say.

I didn't want the clothes I saw

because I knew

that charity meant we were poor

and poor was bad

until

I

read

inside my charity bible a verse by some psalmist

that said I was

"fearfully and wonderfully made"

and I knew it wasn't

charity that would make us poor

or money that would

make us rich

I bowed my head and said a prayer

for gifts like these.
