The Lessons Daniel Taught Me
Sitting, ankles-crossed, in a wooden swing
speaking volumes with your silence
brown eyes charged with an anger and disappointment
that you'll never speak aloud
I wanted to touch you....
Watching you walk down a lonely road
in an unfamiliar town
the visible symbol of an emptiness and pain
that I'll never escape alone
I wanted to join you....
Waving goodbye as your car disappeared
into the cool Kentucky night
carrying you away from all my chaos
that you could never understand
I wanted to be you....
Closing the book on a destructive past
writing down memories to serve as future guideposts
to keep me on the straighter path
that you showed me was inside....
I want to thank you.
