The boy on the left, John, is pointing to Maryland.
Other discernable features on the map include:
Iowa - which became the 29th state on December 28,1846
- was already a state;
Wisconsin - which became the 30th state on May 29, 1848
- had an unusual shape; and
Minnesota - which became the 32nd state on May 11,1858
- had not yet entered the union.
