Grandpa's Stars-n-Stripes

(design courtesy of Quick Quilts: Stars and Stripes Forever)

"Grandpa Norbert", my step-dad, opening his Stars-n-Stripes.

5/31 -- Retirement Party Time and the big Reveal!

Grandpa’s Stars –n- Stripes
On the wall or on your lap
The choice is up to you
Let this be just a simple token
For all the things you do

Cut up from some old PJ’s
Piecing this took a while
But this snuggly quilt goes to show you
Old things can still have style

You’ve put in your time, retirement is here
Your work is finally complete,
Kick back, relax and snuggle up,
Enjoy and fall fast asleep.

The project is completed, with the quilt being gifted to Grandpa on Saturday, 5/31, for his retirement.

The back is pieced with a light gray center and burgandy edges.  The quilting was a simple "swirvy-curly-zigzag" in all of the sashings.  Burgandy thread was used in the burgandy sashings, while ivory thread was used in the white areas.

Thankfully, the quilting went smoothly with no difficulties or frustrations.

This entire quilt is being inspired by a set of "Grandpa-style" PJ's and a man's shirt that I purchased at the local thrift shop.

The top burgandy and white pieces are each 2-piece PJ's. The blue fabric is a men's XL short-sleeve shirt. And the bottom burgandy fabric is a pair of "lounging" pants.

I started piecing the blocks on Thursday. They are small, putzy things, but they came together rather quickly. The 18 blocks shown to the right are the 1st block, which needed to be followed by 17 more similar-looking blocks (Block 2).

By the end of Thursday evening, I was able to lay out both sets of blocks, as well as the blue squares that will eventually look like a star once all the sashings are inserted.

Pictured to the right is a glimpse of how the blue star will emerge once all the sashings are in place.
