The Shamanism of Old Midwifery

My Great-Grandmother Mystic expert in reducing Still-births

.I am interested in Shamanism and I was pleased to discover recently my bloodline may lead back to Mongolian shamanism...My Great-grandmother (her name was Fatema) was a midwife in Arabia during the late 19th century. She would have to travel alone in the desert wilderness, braving hyenas, wolves and bandits to deliver babies of Beduoin women. (p>

I asked my mother recently if my Great-grandmother, Fatema, had had any supernatural experiences....because I knew the Mid-wives in the past were the Wise Women who serve as Bridges, Border Guardians between the Worlds of Spirit and the Worlds of Flesh and were responsible for the safe passage from one to the other, i.e. Mid-wives were Shamans.
..I was curious because myself and all my brothers and sisters, plus my Mother have had paranormal/supernatural and "UFO" experiences...which suggests an inherited predisposition. Ancient shamanism tends to run in families. As a consequence of my query, my Mother told me a fascinating story about my Great grand-mother.....

In her neighbourhood there were only two Mid-wives and Fatema used to boast that all her deliveries were successful and there were never any deaths...whereas the other Mid-wife would have a 50% failure rate. Great Grandma claimed that the secret of her success was in her technique of going into a deep trance during the pregnant woman's labour....sitting and waiting at her side....in order to "see" clearly the Realm where the soul of the child-to-be would be arriving from...it was vital that Fatema saw the exact moment of the entry of the infant's soul....because the Angel of Death would also be waiting, ready to snatch the soul before it could be successfully born in human form. Fatema claimed that she could actually see the Angel of Death, in the guise of an Old Hag, lurking like a vulture or praying-mantis. As soon as the soul tries to enter the baby, the Angel of Death would lunge forward to snatch it but my Great Grand-mam was always quicker off the draw and there would be a tug of war between them....and for some strange reason Fatema always defeated the Killer of Babies and so there were never any still-births in her practice.

Me and my Great-grandmother, Fatema in 1984

When I met my Great grandmother in 1984, on my first visit to Syria, she took great pride in telling me that she delivered me...at the time I didn't realised she had been a Mid-wife, so I took it with a pinch of salt and when she told me she had to personally battle for my life, I had no idea what she was refering to....
