Colouring Innocence

Tiny fingers dipped in paint
dripping colourful dreams
into wakefulness

Watercolour houses and macaroni jewellery
stain crepe paper wishes
with rich Show 'n Tell memories

Stick figure families
clothing cool white fridges
that soothe hungry mouths,
feeding talkative minds
Content to stroke white paper,
with fingerprint images

Big, scary monsters
hiding under beds,
waiting in the dark
to be killed by cartoon night-lights
These ugly creations
born of enchanting imagination
seep beauty that is contrasted:
from innocence to bleak reality

But bright faces brushed with smiles
that dance with laughter
Chase negativity's monsters away
Creating effortless love

More than shiny plastic
sealing lunchtime play
Tiny pulsing hearts
beat ryhthms of hope
through fragile chests...
