Yield

So many words left unspoken
Faces filled with regret
Devoting life to our mistakes
and memories we'd rather forget

We can't turn our faces away
and bury the horrors we've seen
Or ask our monsters to spare us
and deny the places they've been

We can't ignore the wounds that have spoken
through the blood that drips on the floor
Nor the instinct to keep violence at bay
when it's yearning for more

But you aren't to be my hero
... saving me from the killing field
I wear the mask of a survivor
and some days to live, you yield...

It defies your code, my sweet warrior
to fight for justice at any cost
It's not that the price is too high
it's that I remember what i've already lost

So I rest with my shadow in the darkened field
cloaked with despair in this barren land
You try to protect an already ravaged soul
Together with strength and honour, you stand

Such defense can't protect us all from the altar
Sometimes justice is slayed without a trace
And when truth, freedom, and morality are sacrificed
I hope I can face the end, with grace...
