My Exposure to Joel Peter Witkin work comes back a long way on my student live in London.
Chanell Four had brought one of the best programmes ever about photographers working with human figures (dead and alive!) tittled " The Body Vile". Later to be released on a Book by London Press.
Witkin reperesent my Dream of Sureallism. I have watched the man work with sketches before the actual shots were taken. The bold drawings Picasso style. How he interact with the Models as subjects.
His seeking and understanding in the beauty of Deformity in human figures, what people consider ugly, freaky, is glorius for him.
The Juxtaposing concept brings somewhat a surprise, rather disturbing, but with a lot meaning in his work.
The way I see it its pervertion, not in the sense of sexuality, but rather on the asthetic values it brings to me visually.
