Louis de Rohan

Rohan was the French ambassador in Austria one time. Marie Theresa disapproved him because she expected a bishop to pray and preach, and not to hunt, shoot and cavort with ladies. Antoinette described him as "unprincipled and a dangerous intriguer."

When the old Grand Almoner (the highest priest) died, Marie Antoinette strongly againist him to become the new Grand Almoner. But since Louis XVI made the promise earlier, and he did not want people to say he changed his mind to please the queen, therefore, Rohan successfully become the new Grand Almoner.

Rohan gave Marie Antoinette a letter through the royal children’s governess, which was his cousin. Rohan did not apologize in the letter, and request audience from Marie Antoinette. She took it very cautiously, she did not refuse the audience, but each time the date was postponed because of other engagements.

Jeanne la Motte entered Rohan’s life and had him involved in the Diamond Necklace Affair.
