There are two types of Advancement Activities in Scouts:
This is advancement from Tenderfoot through Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life to Eagle. We will work on Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class at troop meetings, on campouts, and at summer camp. The best way to advance through the ranks is to attend these activities regularly. Let Dr. MacKenzie know if there is a particular requirement you need to complete. The most important resource for rank advancement is your Boy Scout Handbook. As you complete each rank advancement requirement, make sure that a Scoutmaster signs the back of your book. We will use the back of your Handbook to determine when you have completed requirements. Let Mr. Rougas or Dr. MacKenzie know when you need a Scoutmaster conference or a Board of Review, both of which are required for every rank.
Scouts may earn Merit Badges any time after joining the Troop. Although we
will work on Merit Badge activities at summer camp, troop meetings, Merit
Badge University, and campouts, it is up to the Scout to take the initiative to
complete merit badge requirements. To earn a merit badge:
1. Decide which Merit Badge you wish to earn.
At the Troop meeting on September 12, 2000, we passed out a survey to
see which merit badges the scouts were most interested in earning. Here
are the results of Troop 60 Merit Badge Survey for 2000.
2. Find a Merit Badge Buddy to earn the Merit Badge with you. Scouts work in
pairs to earn Merit Badges.
3. Talk to Dr. MacKenzie. He will give you a signed blue Merit Badge
Application card and the name of the Counselor for the Merit Badge. You
should not start the Merit Badge until you have the signed application card.
4. It is the Scouts' responsibility to contact the Merit Badge Counselor and
arrange a time for the three of you to meet. Meet with the counselor and
review the requirements for the badge. Work out a schedule for regular
meetings to complete the badge. As each requirement is completed, your
Counselor can sign off on that requirement on the application card.
5. When the Counselor has signed off on all the requirements for the Merit
Badge, bring the card back to Dr. MacKenzie. He will get your badge for the
next Court of Honor.
