When I was told about this top ten list I was really excited and thought I would just sit down and write my ten favorite books and mail it to Delph! Little did I know that I would have such a hard time choosing only 10!! After reading the other lists I thought I would do something a little different. Since I teach kiddos I am mostly exposed to children’s literature so I thought....why not my top ten books for kids?! So here they are....
1. Any and all Dr. Seuss.....enough said!
2. Are You My Mother? P.D. Eastman
This was the first book I learned to “read”. My poor mother read it so many times that she would “lose” the book sometimes to keep from having to read it AGAIN!!!
3. The Arthur series by Marc Brown
Arthur is your typical aardvark. He has some of the same problems that other young aardvarks have. He also has many exciting adventures! Who ever thought Arthur would meet the president??
4. Any and all books by Don and Audry Wood
I especially liked The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and THE BIG HUNGRY BEAR (it is one book)
5. Bunnicula by James Howe
This is a hilarious story about an obsessive cat, a hungry dog, a vampire bunny and the family they live with. Curious?? Good!!
6. The Legend of the Blue Bonnet and The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush by Tomi DePala These stories are based on Indian legends but they also have a lesson about the human spirit.
7. Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White
This book was read to me in the second grade. The part of the book where the swan has his webbed feet cut so he could hold the chalk, even though he knows he will never be able to swim again, haunts me to this day. It has always seemed to say that learning is the greatest thing of all and pursue it no matter what the cost. When we finished the book we had a bonus word on our Friday spelling test...it was catastrophe, and to this day I can still spell that word!
8. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
WOW! This books is a lesson on the power of friendship and unconditional love!
If you have not read it, READ IT!
9. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs
This is the story of the three little pigs told from the innocent wolf’s point of view...he was framed dontcha know!! It is also a must read!!!
10. Since I know the lists needed to stay short in the interest of time and web space I decided to list authors that have published numerous books that I have read and reread over the years. S.E. Hinton, Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis to name a few.
