Random Memories From My Childhood
Written by Lonnie Hiebert
• Mike was swinging on the rope in Grandpa Klaassen’s hayloft and the rope broke sending Mike sliding across the barn floor.
• I remember going to Deena’s ballet recital and eating Hot Tamales. I remember how loud it was when we shook the box of candy.
• Every year on the first day of school, Mom would take our picture on the front porch.
• We always played football in the house and we broke many light covers.
• I remember playing nerf basketball in the living room with Mike and sometimes just by myself.
• Poor Greg Bergen. Mike and I broke toys almost every time we went to his house. We would wrestle over them and accidentally break them.
• When I was sleeping in the basement, Mike used to wake me up from naps by throwing firecrackers in the room.
• Once, Mike and I fell off the round top at Grandpa Klaassen’s house.
• Grandpa Klaassen often times loaded all the grandkids in the back of his green pickup truck and took us fishing down at the creek.
• One time, we put a cat in an empty jack-in-the-box. When we turned the handle, the cat’s hair got caught in the gears. Dad had to cut its fur to get it out.
• I remember shooting our slingshots at the groundhogs when we went camping at Wilson Lake with Bergens.
• One time, Mike and I broke the basement window in our room and didn’t tell Mom and Dad so we wouldn’t get in trouble. The next day when I came running down the stairs, there was a snake lying on the floor. I remember I had to jump really quick so I wouldn’t step on it.
• I remember the time we broke Mom’s old rocking chair when Dad and I were wrestling in the living room.
