BIOGRAPHY

Sara Schroeder was the first of four children born to Johann and Sara Unruh Schroeder in Kleefeld, South Russia. Sara came from a very poor family. Her father had very bad arthritis. And when it came to the point he could not take care of the farm any longer, the responsibility was laid upon the rest of the family.

One Christmas Sara came downstairs to find she received a postcard for her one and only present.

After her father passed away and her mother's health went bad, she was forced to take care of her mother and the farm. This overwhelming responsibility contributed to the reason she accepted John's proposal of marriage.

Sara lived in John's house for the rest of her life. Sara's grandaughter, Bonnie (Hiebert) Ratzlaff, remembers that Sara could not speak any English. Bonnie would play Little Red Riding Hood and run into her grandma's room, walk to the bed and say, "My what big teeth you have!" and would run out screaming. Who knows what Sara could have been thinking?

Bonnie sometimes didn't think too highly of her grandmother. Once when Bonnie was two years old, she was sitting on her grandma's lap rocking in the rocking chair, and a moth flew into her ear. Her father took her to the kitchen table and forced the moth out. However, Bonnie could feel it fluttering in her ear and was certain that her grandma put it in there on purpose.
