Loss of Honor

These days it seems more and more evident that a great deal of the world has lost it's honor. Like take practically any area in life. No one seems to have a give rather than a take mentality. Everyone is looking to cheat the government. No one wants to pay taxes and everyone wants a handout. Homeless people, at least in my town, have no excuse being homeless. There are plenty of jobs, they just don't want to work. But, to the credit of the homeless, some are too mentally deficient to be able to be employed. Still, it's disheartening because I work hard for what I have. I don't go asking for a handout because I didn't earn it.
Sports is another arena that no one seems to care about others. It's become common place where one just cares about the end result. Just goal oriented to win, win, win. If someone gets knocked down, few help them up. Depressing, especially when coupled with the overall downfall of honor.
I'm not saying that 50 years ago didn't have it's share of hardship. But, for instance, during the Great Depression, many people felt ashamed to go on welfare. That they had to ask for someone else's help really bothered them. Today, most people woudlnt' think about not only taking from the Government when in need, but even when they aren't in need. This whole thing doesn't look to be getting better either. That's what really scares me.

Bright star, I would I were as steadfast as thou art
Not in lone splendor hung aloft the night
And watching with eternal lids apart
Like nature's patient sleepless ermite
Their moving waters at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round Earth's human shores
Or gazing on the new soft fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors
No, yet still steadfast, still unchangeable
Pillowed upon my fair love's ripening breast
To feel forever it's soft fall and swell
Awake forever in a sweet unrest
Still, still to hear her tender taken breath
And so live ever, or else swoon to death

John Keats
