Just wanted to say thank you after reading your message on the Ranger Association's comment board. Back in 1984, I was so very lucky to be one of the original members of the new 3rd Batt. My good fortune allowed to be Top 90mm Gunner in the battalion. My
ody weight was about 150 and at times I was humping about 120 or so...From day zero thru 8-9 months of hell, I knew they wre trying to kill us. But, in truth and in retrospect, we were being given what it took to uphold the ultimate responsibility. This p
riod of time was our RIP, our opprtunity to earn the single greatest accomplishment of our lives. the right and highest honor a man could dream of, to wear, ever so proudly, the RANGER Black Beret. Not just a black beret-one each, but the symbolic represe
tation of one of the most honorable, courageous, and truly devoted groups of men in the world. So, thank you for your respect and taking the time to honor the sacrifices, the men, and what it truly means to serve. Nothing I posses means more to me than th
t Beret. Funny thing though, the Beret looks pretty servicable, but my trusty ol' OD Patrol cap is ragged and worn... We didn't wear the Beret a lot, we lived in the bush 99% time and loved every minute of it... Good luck in your service and personal life
SSG Shimer, I hope your troops and peers respect and appreciate your proffesionalism. Rangers Lead the Way, but we never forget, it takes an Army to win the war... All the best, Dave

I just finished reading through all the sign ins on your guestbook and found so much information. I can not wait to sit down and sort through all of this. I know I have information that will be of interest. My father is George Bayard Shimer. He is the
one everyone talks about that lives in Idaho. Right now he is in the midst of relocating so he is not in touch very much on the computer. I live in Nyssa, Oregon, on the Idaho - Oregon border. It is awesome to read the names of people and places I have
grown up hearing about. Thanks and I will be in touch.

I've visited the site several times, but this is the first time I've thought to leave a message. Appears that you and I are related in some fashion...your gr. gr. grandfather (James Garfield) and my gr. grandfather (Benjamin B.) were brothers. Benjamin
s son Lemuel Harley was my grandfather and Ronald Lemuel my father...and Joshua Lemuel is my son. I have some information that can provide details for filling in some of the "holes" in the family tree for the descendants of Benjamin B.
My family and I attend the Shimer Reunion held each year around this time...not certain if it is the same one referenced on your site by the George from Idaho, although it appears it may be as he is presumably a descendant of Willis (also a brother of Ben
amin and James) who I believe moved from Calhoun County WV to Elkins. This reunion used to be held at the family farm (Harley's farm) in Munday, Wirt County WV but has recently moved to the Parkersburg area. This year's is on Saturday, July 8 at the Com
unity Center in Vienna WV.
My son and I have done quite a bit of research on the Civil War travels of George Washington Shimer and have determined that Company C of the 11th Regiment WV Volunteers was separated from much of the 11th Regiment during the latter part of the War. Cons
quently there is some pretty interesting history that we don't believe has been identified previously, in other words some of the work that Colvin Snider has done differs with what we have found in our research. Don't have time to go into all of this now
but did want to leave you a note...more later.

Hi. Looking forward to checking your research for info on my great grandfather John S. Scheimer. He was supposedly born in 1865. I have three references to him living in Bay City, MI as a carpenter in 1902, 1904 & 1912. He married a Catherine R. Gallagh
r about 1883. She was the daughter of two Irish immigrants & her brother became the bishop of Detroit. Haven't been able to find their marriage license or anything showing John's birthplace or parents. Joe S.

In case you never saw it, I have the New York Times Sunday addition that has the story about our Plt. in Hatti. Also I thought a good story you could add would be about the night of the flood, or the night we almost "executed" ( that's not an actual execution for all you CID agents out there, so don't bother to call) the bayonet thief. Anyway, real good page. Give me a ca l some time before you leave. I'm still in the 554th DSN 431-2475. I'm due some leave fairly soon so it'd be nice too hit the bars again. Hey Mike, this is Rob from Pittsburgh. I managed to find my grandmother's
"World Book Of Shimers". I didn't get too much info out of that. I ordered
Allen Shimer's book from Barnes and Noble. If any- body who reads this in
your guestbook wants to buy a copy, they can go to the B&N store or order
from their web page at www.barnesandnoble.com . I haven't had much time to
do much research over Christmas break, because of the bad weather and work.
My little brother was out at the Carnegie library and he ran across a Civil
War roster book for NJ. In it he ound the name of Captain Cornelius C. Shimer
who was K.I.A. May 12,1864 at Spotsylvania VA. Hopefully when schools out
for the summer I can take a drive up to McConnellsburg and talk to some of
the Shimers up there. Also, I found out who the James Shimer is from the
Civil War pension paper I found in my grandmother's attic. I'm almost positive
he's my great grandfather.

died 1759. This is a geneology page done by Deborah and James Jackson. It
is definately worth checking out.

Mike, Well, after I left my note in your guest book, I read your "Some info
about me". Looks like we are cousins! Your Great Grandfather, Dale, was my
Grandfather's brother. I don't know if we have met or not; I don't get back
to PA often. However, we were there last April, and met with Mic's daughters
(Shirley and Nancy) and their families. I have a little bit of stuff I got
from Nancy and Shirley: Copies of two newpaper articles from The Calhoun
Chronicle in 1979, which trace the Shimers in Calhoun County, WV from the
Frederick, Daniel and Michael through when Grandad left WV. If you don' have
a copy, let me know, and I'll send you one. I have "Descendants of Daniel
Shimer" from the Pennsylvania Archives. Again, if you don't have, let me
know. I have a copy of a letter to the Editor of the Calhoun Chronicle from
Eliot Shimer (Columbus, H) describing his relationship to the WV family.
I've also got a photo-copy of a hand-written letter from "Mother" to "Geita
(???)"; I don't know who these people are. One other interesting piece of
information: In his book "Plain and Amish", Bernd Langin discusses the European
history of Mennonites, Amish and Anabaptists. For several pages (164 - 167)
he discusses various people being persecuted. On page 165 - 166: "In the
Hague, Netherlands, after long inter ogations, the widow Weynken Claes .
. . was strangled for her faith on November 20, 1527. . . Two months after
Weynken's death, Leonhard Schiemer was beheaded and burned at Rattenburg
in the Tirol." Not sure if Leonhard is connected to us, but could be. Nice
to meet you.

My immediate family comes from an area outside of Pittsburgh, PA. My brother,
Robert Milford Shimer, lives near Chicago, and my sister, Nancy Kaye Shimer
Heiden, lives in Columbus, OH. My father, Milford Jack Shimer, was born and
raised in Beaverfall, P . His father, Milford Allen Shimer (everyone called
him Mic) moved to Beaverfalls from West Virginia with his family when he
was a young boy. We descend from the Daniel,Michael, Frederick migration.
Somewhere, I have some information back to one of the three, but I don't
have it in hand right now. I have a son (Adam Michael) and a daughter (Shirley

I am from Pittsburgh PA. As far as I know most of my relatives are from the
McConnellsburg PA area. My grandmother had a list of births and deaths that
dated back to 1802, but my aunt took it after my grandmother was put into
a nursing home. The only othe info that I have been able to find is a Civil
War pension paper that I think belonged to my great grandfather. His name
was James Shimer, and he, along with other family members served in the 158th
PA volunteer infantry around Gettysburg.
