92d Military Police Company
Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH)
Operation Joint Forge
March - June 1999
The 92d Military Police Company,
part of the 709th Military Police Battalion and 18th Military Police Brigade,
deployed to Sarajevo from Baumholder and Darmstadt, Germany, on March 7th,
1999. The deployment was due to the recent unrest in the divided city of
Brcko in the American Multi-National District (MND) North sector. The 92d
replaced elements of the Norwegian Telemark Battalion as security and Quick
Reaction Force (QRF) for the HQ SFOR (Stabilization Force) compounds at camps
Ilidza and Butmir. The Telemark troopers had been tasked with acting as a
theater quick reaction force in response to the controversial decision to
keep Brcko multi-ethnic in it's population and government.
The 92d received a 24 hour alert-and-deploy notice in early March and was
fully prepared and mission capable within the 24 hour deadline. Upon arrival,
members of the unit received an in-processing brief by the HQ's SFOR Commandant's
staff and relieved in-place the Moroccan security detail in less than 4 hours
after beginning their On the Job Training. The facilities occupied by the
guard force and operations sections were well below U.S. Army MP standards,
to say the least. A general security assessment was conducted and work requests
coordinated through the Engineering Service Support (ESS) section immediately.
Due to hostilities escalating in and around the Republic of Serbia, BiH,
and the start of the air war later in March over the skies of neighboring
Kosovo, increased vigilance in entry control procedures and perimeter security
were needed. This was especially the case at Camp Butmir, which sat within
the boundaries of the Serbian side of this ethnically divided former Yugoslavian
republic. The 92d conducted the following missions while deployed to
Sarajevo:
Pass and ID / Entry Control
Perimeter Security
Quick Reaction Force (Butmir/Ilidza)
Immediate Response Force (Sarajevo)
