~Welcome Back!~

May 28th, 2000
I know, I know, I have been neglecting this column for quite some time. I have gotten settled in "Out in the West Texas town of El Paso..." like the song goes. As always, the Army tends to abuse those of us who give a 100%; usually to pick up the slack for the non-team players. But like we say in the military, 'The maximum effective range of an excuse is zero meters.'

So, anywho... I'm back and I promise to organize some of the new research I've received into some semblance of order.

One Hot Topic, which I think will help us all enormously, is a Shimer Family Message Board. The link is below and was given to me by Bob Hubler. Thanks to whoever started this board and thanks Bob for letting me know about it!

~Reunions~

George Shimer of Shoshone, ID let me know about a family reunion back in West Virginia around July 8 - 9. To my knowledge, this is the only reunion of Shimers of it's kind still occurring. The Shimers who live in this area of West Virginia are mostly descendants of William Shimer, a son of James Shimer and grandson of Daniel Scheimer.
George writes:

"Every Summer our family has a reunion back in W.Va. My father started it when my two brothers came home from the Navy after World War II and we have had it every year since. I think he started it about 1948."

Let's try to keep tradition alive! I am going to try my hardest to attend and I hope I can see some of you online Shimers there too!

I intend to start a new page dedicated to recording the military service and stories of some of the Shimer Veterans. If you know of any Shimers who served in the military and would like to share stories, pictures or service records, please feel free to email me at mshimer@yahoo.com.
