Came across this interesting article on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle's business secion: Deconstructing Benchmarks

Just scroll down until you see "DECONSTRUCTING BENCHMARKS" in all caps. The author, Henry Norr, spent a fairly considerable amount of time testing with PSbench.

Many have asked for them, so here they are. Newer versions of PS5bench with larger image sizes. Today's processors toss around 10MB images with ease, so I am releasing two additional versions:
PS5bench 1.11 (Intermediate) uses a 20MB image.
PS5ench 1.11 (Advanced) uses a 50MB image.

I will be releasing PS5bench 1.11 (Professional) which uses a 100MB image once I revise the submission process. To those of you who have submitted scores that I haven't published yet, don't worry, they're coming. Thanks for your patience.

Head over to the download section to download these latest versions.

Results for PS5bench are forthcoming as well as updates to the PS4bench chart of preliminary results. I have received a lot of requests for a discussion area, and have just installed UltimateBB for this purpose. I started out with two basic conferences for Photoshop 4 and Photoshop 5 peformance discussion. These areas are to be used to share information regarding Photoshop performance that resulted from using the benchmark. If you have suggestions for conferences, email me.

July 23, 1998
Under Results, I added some information on benchmarking Photoshop using PS4bench'stm Test Image and two "real" images. There are also, a few new submissions that have been added to the table. The PII running at 448MHz (112MHz x 4) should replace the PII 400 as the fastest submission. The person who submitted the score reported disk activity, so I don't think enought memory was allocated since the machine has 64MB.

I put up the beta release of PS5bench after getting lots of email requesting it. I had wanted to wait until the update patch for 5.0.1 was released, but it's hard to say when that will be. The results should give us a good picture of the performance difference between Photoshop 4 and Photoshop 5.

PS5bench also marks the return of the Lighting Effects filter that gave Macintosh users so much trouble in PS4bench. It turns out that Photoshop actions weren't as cross-platform as Adobe wanted them to be. Also, keep an eye out for the upcoming release of PS4benchPRO, which will use a larger test image. I look forward to hearing comments on PS5bench, and seeing which machines faired best in the upgrade from Photoshop 4 to Photoshop 5.

June 9, 1998
The concept for PS4bench came about after reading about a test that was done by a well known periodical. They were trying to compare Photoshop performance between a number of different platforms. Unfortunately, the image size and memory settings made it impossible for the operations to be performed entirely in memory. In addition, the operations they chose used only the default settings, or used operations that were obviously optimized for MMX. I wanted to know the true performance difference between the Macintosh and Wintel platforms, as well as be able to make comparisons within each platform. I had used the timing feature in Photoshop 4 to do tests in the past, and figured it would be nice to have a Photoshop action that included a number of relevant Photoshop operations. So near the end of May, while taking a break from studying for finals, I threw together an action with 10 operations. The next day, I added 10 more operations and put together a rudimentary web page. Since then I have cleaned up the HTML a bit, and posted preliminary results.

It is my hope that PS4bench will grow into a tool that Photoshop users can rely on for making decisions about which machine is right for the level of Photoshop performance they need. In addition, it is my goal for PS4bench to be a reliable means of deciding which upgrades will give the best performance increase. The Photoshop Action that is PS4bench is still in development stage, but it works flawlessly.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions and hope that you will take the time to run the benchmark and submit your results.
