Constantine's Foot, Rome
Urbi et orbi are words that form part of the sovereign pontifical benediction. The Popes believed their messages extend to the entire Universe. By extension, to publish Urbi et orbi was publish everywhere. Urbi, or Vrbi written Roman style, was the city of Rome of course. Parts of the remains of Constantine’s enormous statue, including the giant left foot, were removed from the Basilica of Constantine in the Roman Forum. The pieces of this fourth century sculpture lie in an interior courtyard on top of one of the seven hills of Rome: Il Capitolini.
This large , oval piazza, once Emperor Domitian’s Stadium is lined with Baroque Palaces. It features 3 fountains including Bernini’s masterpiece: the Fountain of the Rivers, situated in the center of the piazza. This fountain depicts the Nile, Ganges, Danube and the Plate Rivers. The Piazza is a popular place for tourists and Romans who come to imbibe the art and the gelata nearby.
