BOW TOP 'OPEN LOT' CARAVAN

There were many names given to this style of gypsy caravan.  The basic design being a barrel shaped, canvas covered waggon.  The main differences between a bow top and an open lot is that one has a solid front and door and the other has a curtain and canvas front.  This style of gypsy caravan was built from a small waggon using the same construction techniques as the 'Ledge' caravan.  Being small and therefore a lighter weight vehicle, a pony or small horse would have been used.  This model was made from commercial plans prepared by John Thompson and is in the 1/8th scale.  The model is highly decorated inside and out, using predominately red colourings.  The model is constructed in hardwood with brass for the metalwork.

The furnishings: -

  • The bedchamber is complete with bedclothes.  Velvet curtains drape the front of the upper bed and decorated opening doors enclose the lower bed.
  • The stove is of copper and brass complete with surround and etched mirrors to the mantelshelf.
  • The roof has three layers.  Outside a tarpaulin like material then strengthening centre layer and inside the ceiling, which is of velvet material.
  • There are two glass cabinets, one on either side together with cupboards and drawers - all highly decorated.
  • A table with drawers below is painted with pictures of wild roses.  The floor is carpeted.
  • A battery-operated lamp illuminates the interior.
