BRUSH CARAVAN

Sometimes known as the Fen Waggon.  The original full-size 'waggon' on which this model is based is unique.  It is owned by Peter Ingram and kept at his museum in Hampshire.  Mr Ingram's Brush Waggon is unfortunately, in poor state of repair and so unlikely to be restored to its original condition.  Thus this model makes an important record of a unique Gypsy vehicle.  Stubbs of Barrowden built the original in about 1910.  This caravan is a horse drawn travelling shop.  The entrance is at the rear, which makes this caravan different from all others.  This rear entrance was of practical importance giving access to the shop without removing the horse.  The model, in 1/8th scale, was made with the aid of plans by the late John Thompson and with additional information obtained from the original vehicle.  The model is finished in a blue colouring, being highly decorated inside and out.  The roof lifts off for easy viewing of the interior.  Materials used in the construction of this model are hard woods and softwoods with brass for the metal work.

The furnishings: -

  • The bedchamber is complete with bedding, balustrade and a velvet curtain bed front.  Three horse paintings decorate the rear wall.  Additional storage/sleeping space below is accessed by sliding doors.
  • The stove is of copper and brass, complete with surround and etched mirrors to the mantelshelf.
  • A glass fronted cabinet with drawers; a corner cabinet and chest of drawers complete the storage space.  A folding table is also an interesting built-in fitment.
  • A wall mounted cherub lamp provides the lighting and dedicated china plates provide a personal touch.
  • The floor is carpeted and curtains are fitted to the windows.  Leather top built-in seating is also shown.
  • The ceiling is painted and the interior decorated with many traditional motifs.
  • As an indication of the detail built into this attractive model there are a total of 35 pairs of hinges fitted to the cupboard and door openings.
