The Real Nancy
Drew Mystery
(It's a gag okay?!?)
You think you've heard the latest controversy over the Nancy Drew Mysteries? Word that they were created by the same publishing syndicate that produced the Hardy Boys and that the books were team authored, and the credited female author never really existed? What's the real secret that lay in that old trunk in the attic, besides a few dusty corsets and an old silk gown? |
If it was not a woman who wrote the Nancy Drew Mysteries, then who? And what were the meanings of all those things we thought were so innocent? Who was Nancy really trying to deceive in the illustration on the left? Was she telling us as youngsters that there are appropriate times for masquerading around in someone else's dress late at night? |
Not knowing the mastermind behind the stories opens up the issue of what the true meaning of many of the chapters and captions are. Was Nancy warning her girlfriend here that their cover was blown, or was she telling her boyfriend his gender had been detected? |
Are we to believe that Nancy was created solely for the purpose of building up the self-esteem of young ladies? Or was there some kind of double meaning tucked away in each chapter and illustration for young men in gender identity crisis? Secrets in the Attic? Masquerades late at night? Supposed all-girl tea parties? Trying to pass as an innocent shopper? Hmmm... |
I am waiting for Hollywood to exploit Nancy Drew by making her into the next unimaginative action movie regurgitation (Daredevil, Hulk, etc.). |
