I wasn’t there
Yet I still have nightmares
The screeching of tires
The slam of another car
Hitting my family’s
Having to hear their cries ring out loud
I imagine of sitting and worrying
About where they could be
Wondering if it is my turn
To have the police tell me
My loved ones are gone
Even in the day
When my mind is clear
Not cloudy with sleep
I find myself sometimes
Waiting anxiously
For them to come home
Safely to me
Unharmed by the hands
Of a drunk drive
Unlike my friend who died
One cold November day.
Dedicated to the Waldron family
in memory of their two daughters
Thera and Autumn who killed in a
drunk driving accident
November 1, 1996.
