Sitting on the Sidelines
We had the same class in Spanish,
But I was so terribly shy---
I seemed to just suddenly vanish
Every time you passed by.
Though I stayed completely mum,
I knew somehow my time would come.

Sitting on the sidelines
Waiting for my chance
Hoping that some day
I'd be in the game.

Sitting on the sidelines
Praying for a glance
For you to look my way
And know you felt the same.

But time passed by
And all the other fellows made the forward passes,
While I stood mumbling
Against the wall;
Time passed by
And I stayed watching through my glasses
And kept on fumbling
My imaginary ball.

Sitting on the sidelines
Longing for romance,
But to my dismay
You hardly knew my name.

I learned then---
And it came as quite a blow---
That one of life's best guidelines
Is sitting on the sidelines
Is not the way to go.
