What Might Have Been

The edge of the ocean
Is chilled by the first signs of day---
Let's turn our eyes away
And look to the moon.
The edge of the ocean
Will only remind us
That this rare
But brief affair
Must end at noon.

I might have heard you say, "Come see the sun"
Before we sat down to dine;
We might have paused when the dinner was done
And watched our daydreams entwine.

You might have asked me to turn out the light
Then talked of things that we planned;
You might have called out my name in the night,
You might have reached for my hand.

When morning came
And it was time to arise
We might have been unafraid
To gaze in each other's eyes
To see what our love was,
To know what we'd see---
Just think what might have been,
Oh, think what might have been
For you and for me.
