YOU TOOK TOO LONG

The moment we met I could truly believe
I’d found the one who was right---
I was wearing my heart on my sleeve
While yours was nowhere in sight.
And now you tell me you’ll give it a go
And you expect I’m gonna feel great---
But the primary thing you don’t seem to know
Is it comes too goddamned late.

You took too long,
Too damned long---
While I was clinging to every straw,
You’d dilly-dally and hem and haw
And I would chafe at the bit.

You took too long,
Too damned long---
While I would mortgage the faml’y farm
And gladly give up my good right arm---
You’d refuse to commit.

I tried everything
From building up
To tearing down
All of my defenses---
I tried everything
Until all that striving
And all that conniving
Had simply deadened my senses.

And before I knew it
I was free again  and strong
Cause you took too long,
Too goddamned long,
Too goddamned fucking long!!
