INGRID BERGMAN

Sweden

Born: Stockholm, Sweden, 29 August 1915.
Died: London, England, 1982.

Swedish actress, alongside Greta Garbo, Sweden's most famous export to Hollywood. In 1933 Bergman enrolled at the School of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm and two years later made her screen debut in Munkbrogreven / The Count of Munkbron (1935), directed by Edvin Adolphson and Sigurd Wallén. She came to prominence in Gustof Edgren's melodrama Valborgsmässoafton / Walpurgis Night (1935), in which she plays the "ideal woman," the beautiful, gentle blonde who longs to be a wife and mother. She made six films with Gustaf Molander, among them Intermezzo (1936), another melodrama in which she is a young pianist hopelessly in love with a famous violinst (Gosta Ekman). It was on the strength of this film that David O. Selznick invited her to Hollywood, to star in a 1939 American version of the film (co-starring Leslie Howard). By then she had solidified the basic elements of her screen persona, a combination of naturalness, romantic passion and distinction, her "wholesome" beauty contrasted to Garbo's more distant glamour. In the 1940s Bergman bloomed into major stardom with films such as Casablanca (1942), Gaslight (1944) and Notorious (1946). Her career and reputation suffered in 1949 when she left Hollywood and her family for Roberto Rossellini (for several years she was unable to work in American films). She starred in five features and an episode directed by Rossellini, including Stromboli, terra di Dio / Stromboli (1950) and Viaggio in Italia / Journey to Italy (1954), which failed at the box office but were praised by critics, especially in France. She also starred in Jean Renoir's Eléna et les hommes / Elena and Men / Paris Does Strange Things (1956, France), while regaining her status in Hollywood with Anastasia (1956, for which she was awarded her second Oscar). She continued her career, though at a slower rate, in international productions in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1978 she worked for the first and only time with her unrelated namesake Ingmar Bergman in Höstsonaten / Autumn Sonata. One of her daughters with Rossellini, Isabella Rossellini, is a famous model as well as a film and television actress.
