On the Polish stage from 1953, he made his film debut the following year and quickly became internationally known. Typically appearing in dark glasses, and often in angry-young-man roles, he personified Poland's perplexed postwar youth. Just before his death in a railway accident he was preparing his first film as a director. Andrzej Wajda's Everything for Sale (1968) was inspired by and dedicated to the memory of Cybulski and the vaccum he left behind.
