Marker, who has been making documenetaries since 1952, is considered a member of the "Left Bank" of the New Wave for his left-wing politics and the way his work combines social issues with formal experiment. He has shot films in many countries, but perhaps his most famous film, Le Joi mai (1963), is a portrait of Parisians in May 1962, a classic of cinéma-vérité in its blend of ethnographic interviews with auteurist self-portrait. For Marker as for Jean-Luc Godard, 1968 marked a turning point; Marker turned to collective film-making with the founding of SLON. In the 1980s and 1990s, his films, especially Sans soleil / Sunless (1983) and L'Héritage de la chouette / The Legacy of the Owl (1988), were complex reflections on image culture (film, video, photography) in the post-modern era. Versatile and cultured, Marker is also a writer and has worked at various times as editor, cameraman and producer. — Ginette Vincendeau, Encyclopedia of European Cinema
