NOT LONG NOW
NOT LONG NOW

It won't be as long as it has been,
I say to myself now and then
And I think about all that I've ventured,
And the few times I've made a slight gain.
I dream of the dozens of places
I wanted to see on the way
And all of the good and bad people,
That never quite seasoned my day.
The sunsets I missed on strange islands,
Some winding path over a hill -
A lilac or two in full glory
And hundreds of children that smile.

I long for a clasp of warm welcome,
From a loved one who's left worldly cares -
Then remember I spent countless hours
With someone who really did care.
I regret the kind words omitted,
I tried, but not hard enough -
For I needed a boost on my journey,
Some detours became a bit rough.
But once I saw a quite spacious rainbow
That practically covered the sky
A red fox aglow in a car headlights -
And billions and billions of fireflies,
One night against the dark sky.

Once I stayed in a haunted plantation,
And it's fun looking back on it now,
I've laughed and I've loved for no reason,
And hopefully love was returned.
These years would have kept many busy,
And time is hurtling by.
Yet no reason to sit back and ponder,
The pace is still pretty high -
But it won't be as long as it has been
My heart echoes back with a sigh.
