Chapter 4
The following weekend comes and goes and Brenda finds herself sitting in her classes again, thinking about all the deaths in the area lately. 'This just seems too weird to be real. Like, I guess one could say that life was going too well for a lot of us so this is all a reality check, but it is certainly a harsh one,' Brenda thinks to herself.
"Bren! Snap out of it girl! You have to get yourself ready if we're going to get out of here for our tennis match!" Jenilee says right in Brenda's ear, making her jump.
"Jenilee! I told you never to do that around me. Geez. Thanks for the reminder though. I'll pack my stuff up and we'll go hit the locker room to change. Ready for the match?"
"Yeah right! I'm more excited about going to the concert tonight!"
"Right! I forgot you were going to that boy band concert. I'm sure you'll do lots of drooling."
"I definitely will. It won't seem the same though, since Gail isn't here to use her ticket," Jenilee states, getting a wishful look in her eyes.
Brenda gives her friend a hug, packs up her backpack, and heads out into the halls to make their way to the locker room.
Ann and Jenilee happily sit down once they found seats 27, 29, row 13, in section 4 of the venue. "Can you believe we are actually here?" asks Ann.
"No way! I'm so excited! I just wish that Gail were here to enjoy it too. She would love the opening acts. Oh Ann, why did she have to die?" Jenilee responds, trying not to look at the empty seat next to her.
"Stop this! Jenilee, can't you see that it's in the past? We can't do anything about it anymore. Just move on."
"Ann! I can't believe you said that. That is one of the cruelest things I have ever heard come out of your mouth."
"I'm sorry but I just don't see the purpose of mourning someone that isn't here. It's not like she really cared about us anyway."
"Ann!"
"Look, I'm just being honest. She and I never saw eye to eye on anything but kept things low between us for the sake of keeping the group running smoothly. Besides, Gail would never want us to freak out over her death for long."
"Still… It feels as if she hasn't been in her grave for long."
"It shouldn't matter. Jenilee, just get over it and move on. We're here for the guys, remember?"
"Well maybe you can move on that easily but I can't. I'm going to get something to eat."
"Jenilee! The lights are going out and the concert is starting."
"So what? I'll be back," Jenilee responds, making her way down the row, up the aisle, and out of Ann's view.
'God, what the hell was that all about? She's so touchy. Perhaps I shouldn't have revealed how much I disliked Gail. Oh well…' Ann thinks, beginning to groove with music.
'I don't think that I've ever heard Ann be as cruel as she just was. How could she have said those things about Gail? Never would I have thought that they didn't get along. Oh God, what is going on around here?' Jenilee wonders, joining the long line for refreshments.
"Jenilee!" calls out a familiar voice.
"Missy? What are you doing here?" Jenilee asks as Missy joins the line behind her.
"I got a ticket off E-bay. It cost a fortune but it is definitely worth it to see those hunks. I didn't know you were coming today."
"Yea, we, meaning Ann and me, as well as…"
"As well as who? Jenilee, are you okay?" Missy asks, realizing that Jenilee was turning rather pale.
"Huh? Oh, yea. The other ticket belonged to Gail. The three of us waited in line all night for those tickets. I wish she was here with us to enjoy it."
"Oh sweetie, I'm sure she is watching from wherever she is. I miss her spunk. It's rather quiet during rehearsals for the play without her."
"Yea, well we all lost a part of us when she left us I think. Then again, some people seem to not even care."
"What do you mean?"
"Oh, nothing. Anyway, what is your seat? Perhaps you bought the won we sold back."
"I'm on the ground level, all the way in the back."
"That sounds pretty good. I do wonder who got that ticket."
"I guess you will find out later. Well, I'm going to go back. I can hear the main act starting."
"It's been that long already?"
"Yup. But hey, you are almost to the front and this line just got longer so don't jump out now! See you later chica!"
"Bye Missy!" Jenilee exclaims, turning back around to stare at the menu board, absently playing with the plastic beads she got when she entered the concert at the door area.
'I don't think this concert could be any better! I wonder where Jenilee is though. It is so unlike her to be missing hot guys, especially these guys! How could she be missing the beginning of the main act? Oh well. At least I am here enjoying it!' Ann thinks to herself as she stands up and grooves with the music.
After the song ends, Ann starts thinking. 'What is taking Jenilee so long? She should have been back by now. Maybe I should go find her,' she concludes, getting ready to start making her way through the row of fans when someone takes a seat in the empty one that should have been Gail's. 'I wonder if I should say hi to whoever is under that black overcoat. I probably shouldn't. I think I will stay right here and enjoy the concert though. Jenilee will make it back eventually.'
The music gets even louder, causing Ann to cover her ears as a renewed round of screaming begins. Ann decides that the only way to help bear this noise is to start screaming herself. After a few minutes of doing this, her throat starts feeling sore but she does not want to stop since stopping means being deafened by all those screams going around her so she keeps on screaming. The pain increases to the point that Ann feels as if she is being choked. She puts her hand to her throat and feels those plastic beads she had gotten at the door tight around her throat.
'That's funny. They were hanging down a lot lower before and I don't remember there being so many strands of beads,' Ann thinks just as the person in the black coat pulls harder on the beaded necklaces. Ann realizes what is going on at this point and attempts screaming but to no avail. Blackness washes over her before she feels herself falling and losing all sense of what is present on earth.
