Chapter 6

"I can't believe those idiots! Why did I ever consider any of them my friends? Why did I even date one of them?" Phil exclaims as he gets into the car with Missy joining him on the passenger side.

"Because they are real friends. They have always been there for me."

"Well open your eyes. That is not how real friends treat each other, no matter what. How could Melinda bring that nosey idiot of a boyfriend of hers to this meeting we had tonight which was supposed to be about the death of Ann?"

"Phil, please calm down. Things can't be as bad as you are making them out to be."

"You want to bet? And John! I thought Brenda would have better taste in guys. I only can pray that she never gets a beating from him. She'd be a wimp and fold in a second."

"Phil! Stop it! First, stop speeding. Second, look who is being the jerk right now! You are sitting here bashing them in for things that you see them as but you are also criticizing them for things you yourself do. You are such a hypocrite!"

"What is this? Now you are on their side? You all can go to hell!" Phil yells, accelerating his car past 85 when he gets on the freeway.

"Phil! Slow down! You are going to get us killed!"

"Like any of those bastards would care!"

"Phil, this isn't funny. I am not going to end my life and my career just because you got pissed off at some of our friends one night. Slow down!!!!!!"

"Oh yea, let's just slow down so your life isn't destroyed. What about mine Missy? Doesn't that count for anything? Or are you just like them, those idiots who believe that I am some fool? Well here's a newsflash: I'm not! Every single person thinks that they can trust me and that they can walk over me. That's going to stop today!"

"Fine Phil but please slow down. We're going to die on this freeway tonight and I don't think either of us are ready for that!"

Phil looks over at Missy and sees exactly how scared she is. "Oh God Missy, I would never do something to harm you. I'm sorry, I'm just so angry!"

"I understand Phil. Please, just slow down, pull off to the side and we can talk about this. Please," Missy pleads, causing Phil's heart to open and be lured to listen to the voice of reason.

Phil takes his foot off the gas pedal and steps on the brake. "What the hell?"

"What?"

"The car isn't slowing down!"

"What?"

"It's not slowing down! I'm stepping on the brake and it won't slow down!"

Missy thinks quickly and throws the car into different gears, finally getting it into park while Phil busily tries avoiding the few cars on the freeway that late at night. "Phil, nothing is working!" she exclaims as the car shows no sign of slowing as they go down a hill, even with the gears in park.

"No! Missy, the steering wheel just locked! I can't control the car anymore!"

"This wasn't supposed to happen!!!" Missy says, beginning to really sob as she sees that Phil's car is veering off to the left, quickly approaching the barrier between them and traffic going the other direction. "Do something Phil, please!"

"I can't!"

"We're going to die!" she screams just as the car hits the barriers and goes through, only to go right in front of another car speeding down the other side at eighty miles per hour.

"We should go visit him, shouldn't we?" asks Jenilee as the group of friends meet again four days after the car accident.

"I don't know. He may not want to see us," John says.

"John has a point. He may blame us for making him so angry that he drove so fast on that freeway and killed Missy as a result," Brenda adds.

"It is hard to recognize the fact that Missy was so alive just a few days ago but will be buried in the ground tomorrow. She was so lively."

"That's true but she did have her dark moments. There were times I was actually scared of being around her," Melinda admits.

"Why would you be scared of a girl?" Colin asks.

"Well, there were just vibes I would get from her. Ask Brenda, she knows what I am talking about."

"She's right. There were those times that I just could not believe that words she was saying were actually coming out of her mouth. It is just weird though to think that all that life she had on her happy days has ended," Brenda comments, leaning against her boyfriend who has his arms wrapped around her waist.

"Well, are we going to go see Phil or not?" John asks, softly kissing Brenda on the head.

"I think we should. Otherwise, it would make us look like bad friends," Jenilee says.

"Right, but are we really friends with him?"

"Perhaps you should, for appearance sake. He is out of the hospital already so it isn't like he was seriously hurt, right? I mean, I don't even really know the guy but I think you all should visit him before seeing him at Missy's funeral tomorrow," Colin states.

"He seems to be right again. Maybe we should stop hiding out here at Jenilee's house and face him. I do feel bad for the guy," Brenda says.

"I don't know. I just don't think seeing him right now will help anything. I mean, he is already probably reliving the fact he killed one of his best friends. Seeing people he had fought with earlier that night can't help him any. Would it be worth it? I don't think so," Melinda finally says.

"Wow Melinda, I didn't know you still cared."

"I don't. To be honest, I just don't want to let him influence me in any way. He was a real class act that night and I don't want to let him think he could do that to all of us and get away with it."

"She does have a point. Besides, I do have to catch my flight later tonight. It has been great spending time with all of you by the way, despite the incidents," Colin says.

"Same here. Well, I guess it has been decided. We will just have to wait and see him tomorrow. So Melinda, are you and Colin going to be heading off your own way now to have some private time?" Brenda inquires.

"I think so. I will call you tonight though Bren. All of you, please take care of yourselves. I don't know if I can take losing any more people in my life," Melinda pleads.

"Well, take care everyone. Don't let your guard down. Whoever is out there killing people or doing whatever could still be out there," Colin says, shaking everyone's hand as a good-bye gesture.

"Thanks for the reminder. I just tried convincing myself there was no real killer," Jenilee admits. "Then again, I know that the deaths before the accident were no real accidents. Who could do this though and for what reason? It makes no sense!"

"Relax Jenilee! Things will be fine, I'm sure of it. Should I pick you up before the funeral tomorrow?" Brenda asks.

"Yes please. I don't think I will be in any shape to drive. I've been so paranoid."

"Just in time for the great Halloween holiday! Paranoia makes the day even better!" Colin comments.

"As if I need paranoia to be freaked out on that day! That's right though, Halloween is in just a week and some days huh?"

"You bet! Well, I think it is time Melinda and I leave. I pray that all of you find happy and long lives and that whatever is going on will end soon."

"Thanks Colin. Have a safe flight!" Brenda says, giving him a hug.

The five part their separate ways but not before Brenda and Melinda could exchange worried looks. Both of them realize at that moment that something horrible is going to happen before these weird events actually end. 'My feeling of dread comes not from paranoia but a premonition from deep within my soul. Please God, keep all of us safe from harm and allow the souls of those murdered lie in peace,' Brenda silently thinks, hoping that they will be enough to satisfy whoever was playing a hazardous game with the lives of this one circle of friends.
